How to Build a Custom Test in Righteo: Step by Step Guide

If you need a skills assessment that fits a role exactly, building your own test gives you full control over the questions, the format, and the scoring. Righteo's Custom Test Builder lets you put one together manually in a few minutes, without relying on a generic template. Here's how to do it from start to finish.
1. Open the Custom Test Tab
From the left sidebar menu, click into Assessments, then select the Custom Test tab. This is where every custom test you build will live, alongside any templates already saved to your library.
2. Click Build New Test
In the top right corner of the screen, click + Build New Test to start a new assessment.
3. Select Create Custom Test
You'll be asked to choose a test type. Righteo gives you two options here: Generate AI Test, where questions and expected answers are created for you, or Create Custom Test, where you build everything manually. Select Create Custom Test, then click Create.
4. Fill In the Test Details
Before you can start adding questions, Righteo asks for a few basic details:
- Test Name – something descriptive, such as "Software Engineer Assessment"
- Difficulty Level – select from the dropdown
- Test Category – select from the dropdown
- Test Summary – a short description of what the test assesses
The more detail you add to the summary, the easier it is for your team to understand the purpose of the test later on. Once the fields are filled in, click Build Test.
5. Add Questions From the Questions Library
This is where the test actually takes shape. On the left, you'll see the Questions Library, split into two groups:
Text elements:
- Heading – adds a title to organise a section of questions
- Paragraph – adds longer descriptive text or context before a question
- Short Answer – an open-ended question with a minimum-length response
- Long Answer – an open-ended question for more detailed responses
Selection elements:
- Multi Choice – respondents pick one or more defined options
- Yes/No – a simple yes or no response
Stop hiring by intuition.
Automate reference checks and skills assessments with Righteo. Get honest, structured insights on every candidate — faster and fairer. Trusted by 1,200+ Australian businesses.
- Select Box – respondents choose from a dropdown
Drag whichever question types you need onto the test builder on the right to start adding content.
6. Edit Each Question
Click the pencil icon on any question to open its settings. From here you can:
- Edit the question title
- Mark the question as Required
- Attach a video link or an image
- Set the correct answer for the question
This step is worth taking your time on, since the correct answers you set here are what the test will be scored against.
7. Reorder the Questions
Once your questions are in place, you can drag and drop them into whatever order makes the most sense for the candidate's experience. Hover over a question and use the drag handle to move it up or down the list.
8. Preview and Publish
Before publishing, click Preview to see the test exactly as a candidate would. Happy with how it looks? Click Publish. Once published, the test becomes available to your entire team, ready to attach to any assessment.
Final Thoughts
Building a custom test manually takes a bit more upfront effort than generating one with AI, but it gives you precise control over what's being assessed and how. Once you've built one, you can reuse and adapt it for similar roles going forward, saving time on every future hire.
