How to Request a Specific Reference Check Type in Righteo

Not every reference check needs the same information. A past employer can speak to a candidate's work performance, a professional contact gives a different perspective on their skills, and a personal connection can attest to their character. Righteo lets you choose the reference type for each referee slot, so you're collecting the right kind of feedback for each role. Here's how to set it up.

The Three Reference Check Types

Reference Type

What It Covers

Employment Reference

Insights from specific past employers

Professional Reference

Feedback from professional contacts

Friends and Family Reference

References from individuals who can attest to the candidate's character and work ethics

Please note: Account Admins can access System Settings to set the default Reference Check Type for the account.

Option 1: Setting the Reference Type When Adding a New Candidate

1. Fill Out the Add Candidate Form

Open the Add Candidate form and fill in the candidate's details. You can request a maximum of 5 referees per candidate.

2. Enter the Number of References Required

Once you type the number of references required, Righteo prompts you to select the reference check type for each referee slot.

3. Select a Reference Check Type for Each Slot

For each referee slot, choose one of the three reference types. You can also add a Specific Referee Note that the candidate will see, guiding them on who to nominate. How this appears to the candidate depends on which type you select:

  • Employment Reference: you can indicate a specific employer. The candidate sees a note such as "Please provide referee details from your most recent employer."
  • Professional Reference: you can add further context as a note, for example "Please provide referee details from a professional in the welding industry."
  • Friends and Family Reference: you can guide the candidate on the type of personal connection needed, for example "Please provide someone who has witnessed your skills in your internship."

4. Choose a Template and Continue

Select the reference check template to be sent to the candidate's referees, then click Continue to complete the candidate setup.

Option 2: Manually Adding Referee Details

If you already have the referee's details and want to add them directly rather than waiting for the candidate to submit them, you can do this from the Candidate Profile.

In the Candidate Profile, use Add Referee to select the reference check type and fill in the referee details. After selecting the reference type and completing the referee information, click Add Referee. The referee details will then appear directly on the candidate's profile, ready for the reference check to proceed.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right reference type upfront means your reference surveys go to the right people asking the right questions. Whether you're collecting employment history from past managers, professional opinions from industry contacts, or personal endorsements, Righteo's reference type selection keeps the process targeted and the feedback relevant to the role.
